Salt Lake Comic Con 2014 is coming up, fast! We are less than one month away from the event. It is time to prepare. Grab your calendar, get a pen, plan which celebrities to see, but what do you do between awesome panels? The vendor’s hall has always been amazing, but here are a few of our favorite local vendors and the reasons why.
Hastur Games and Comics
If you are from the Salt Lake Valley and play Role-playing games, board games, card games, or are a comic book fanatic, you have probably heard of Hastur Games and Comics. If you haven’t, it is time you do.
First, a little history. After Salt Lake Comic Con 2013, I reached out to several local gaming vendors to get their input on Comic Con. Unfortunately, only Hastur responded. To be fair, I have known the staff at Hastur for over a decade. Bob (the owner), Roland (the manager), and Amanda (Roland’s wife who keeps everything organized) are all phenomenal people. When I asked them their thoughts on Comic Con 2013, Roland and Amanda sat down for about 45 minutes and talked about what they expected, what they saw, and that they were definitely interested in returning for 2014. The key thing that all three share is an absolute love of the genre. Bob runs Call of Cthulhu games in the store from time to time. Amanda and Roland are both veterans of gaming and that energy shows, just in talking to them.
At the store, they have demo copies of several games that you can try out and see if it fits your style. Additionally, there are many games being played in the store by customers, including Dungeons and Dragons, Pathfinder, Magic: The Gathering, and several others. If you have been looking for a great place to hang out and meet players, Hastur is it. Swing by the booth and talk to Amanda and Roland, you won’t regret it.
The Truffle Cottage
Sometimes you get bitten by the urge for something delicious while spending hours talking to celebrities and cosplayers. For those times, you want a special treat. The Truffle Cottage is there to provide it.
We first stumbled across the Truffle Cottage at Salt Lake Comic Con 2013. They had the most intriguing chocolates you could imagine, including Han Solo in carbonite, the Tardis, Companion Cubes, and several others. We didn’t get a chance to taste them in 2013, they sold out very quickly. However, at Fan X in April of 2014, we did find them again and picked up some tasty treats. My kids devoured a Han Solo and a C3PO, and they have been asking for more.
The Truffle Cottage has been expanding their production to meet the increasing needs of their publicity. At Fan X they had an amazing plethora of delicious treats and we can’t wait to see what they do for Comic Con 2014. Bring some extra cash, this is one stop you can’t afford to miss. They are also willing to ship, prepare to be addicted.
If you are looking for a memorable geek souvenir, have you considered jewelry? Badali Jewelry makes a plethora of great items to fit the genre. Everything from the One Ring to Harry Dresden’s Shield Bracelet can be found in their inventory.
I first met the staff of Badali Jewelry at Salt Lake Comic Con 2013. My daughters and my wife were as impressed as I was at the detail and elegance shown in the jewelry pieces. I was seduced by the beauty of the One Ring, where my wife was more attracted to their Wheel of Time collection. Unfortunately, other things required our attention and I had to move on.
After Comic Con, I emailed Janelle and got some feedback from their experience at Salt Lake Comic Con 2013. I was pleased to hear about their experience and was glad they intended to return (I still need to pick up a trinket). I inquired to verify they were indeed attending this year, and Janelle informed me that they are at Booth # 817/916 (I assume a corner booth).
If you have been looking for that great high quality item for your fantasy enthusiast, you need to check out Badali Jewelry!
There are so many local vendors at Salt Lake Comic Con that I simply cannot list them all. These are only 3 of the wide variety that will be in attendance this year. In the coming weeks, we will focus on other things to see at Comic Con as we get ready for three days of geek bliss.
